We see this in Best Buy’s Blue Shirt Nation, an internal social networking site that encourages employees to share and discuss their unfiltered customer service experiences and ideas for improvements. Instead of static top-down communications, lattice organizations nurture transparent cultures, providing multiple ways for their people to offer thoughts, ideas, and feedback. Capital One’s efforts to equip their associates with the technology to work from anywhere, while reconfiguring their office space to accommodate a range of needs in terms of “in-office time” is indicative of this. Rather than expecting people to sitting at their desks clocking face time from 9 to 5, lattice organizations offer options for when, where, and how people do their work. They’ve created alternate career paths intended to draw more individuals into certified nurse assistant roles - individuals know that these “gateway positions” open up a variety of future opportunities for them. The Council for Adult and Experiential Learning is using this strategy for addressing the nursing shortage.

A lattice is an adaptive construct chock full of options - options that we’ve organized into three lattice ways. So why a lattice? In mathematics, a lattice is a multi-dimensional structure that extends infinitely in any direction. More experienced workers are relaxing their conservative what-I’m-willing-to-do-for-work attitudes at the same time younger generations are bringing more, shall we say, contemporary expectations to the workplace. workforce and are the hands-down primary wage earners 40% of the time. Economic, demographic, and technological changes are all contributing to a transformation that is making the corporate ladder - a metaphor well suited for the industrial world of the last century - obsolete. The workplace isn’t what it used to be - and neither are the people working in it.
